UAE Condemns Attack on Egypt's Churches
WAM ABU DHABI -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has, in the strongest terms, condemned the evil act which targeted the Coptic Orthodox churches of Saint Mina and Virgin Mary in the Cairo suburb of Imbaba, Egypt and the events which resulted in dozens of injuries and deaths among Egyptian citizens.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gergash expressed the UAE's solidarity with Egypt against this act and reiterated his country's rejection of targeting worshipping places.
He expressed the UAE's condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery for the injured.
Gergash also hailed the religious tolerance which prevailed in Egypt over thousands of years among the followers of all faiths.
He urged the Egyptian people to distance themselves from any attempts to instigate strife as well as to close ranks behind their national unity and higher interests to counteract any attempt to disrupt their country's security and stability.
010 09-2011-05 Iraq Prison Clash Kills 17
At least 17 people, including six security officers, were killed in a clash at a Baghdad prison after al-Qaida inmates held for a church attack seized the weapons of their guards, the National Iraqi News Agency said.
Eleven inmates jailed for the Oct. 31 deadly attack on the Our Lady of Salvation church in Baghdad were killed in the dawn shootout, it said.
Among the convicts reported killed was Huzhayfa al-Batawi. Batawi is the suspected al-Qaida leader of the group that attacked the Syriac Catholic Church, killing 58 worshippers during evening mass.
